OBJECTIVES OF CALLIOPE

Project's goals to achieve

The protection and restoration of dune, marine, sandy and reef ecosystems is of enormous importance, since they represent real reservoirs of plant and animal biodiversity.

The project aims to counter some human activities that alter coastal and marine habitats and their native species.

  1. PLANNING AND MONITORING

Improve the local ecological network of coastal and marine habitats.

Implement, in the Abruzzo region (Italy), the Natura 2000 network including new areas such as the Punta dell’Acquabella Regional Nature Reserve with the mouth of the Moro River and the Ripari di Gio0bbe Regional Nature Reserve with the Parco delle Dune (Municipality of Ortona) and expanding the ZSC IT7140108 Punta Aderci-Punta della Penna towards the sea (Municipality of Vasto).

Contribute, in Cyprus, to the monitoring and updating of the Natura 2000 Network at the SAC CY4000001 Periochi Polis-Gialia site.

Improve the effectiveness of the management and monitoring of the Natura 2000 Network through the preparation of an Integrated Territorial Information System on a WebGIS platform (ITA-CYP-ENG).

  2. RECOVERY AND ENHANCEMENT OF HABITATS

Place wooden walkways to be used to reach the beaches, so as to reduce the impact caused by the foot traffic widespread in these environments.

Restore the dune vegetation by planting seedlings of local species.

Restore juniper maquis (Juniperus spp.), Eradicating the alien species Acacia saligna in Cyprus.

Protect the biodiversity of marine reefs and submerged prairies, regulating access and delimiting the area with signaling buoys in Italy.

  3. AWARENESS AND INFORMATION

Involve local students in environmental education activities.

Increase the environmental awareness of residents and tourists, through awareness-raising and information interventions.

Creation of information and training material.
